Navigating the New Alfresco Community

After much consideration, we decided to migrate EVERYTHING from the wiki, blogs, and forum into the new community - all 75k pieces of content. But, as you've probably noticed, the new space isn't organized exactly as we had it before. I thought I should provide an overview, to let you know where to find everything.

 

Let's start high level. We've divided the community into 3 sections - our platform, a place to connect with other members, and the language groups, all found in the top navigation.

Alfresco Platform

 

The platform encompasses our main three places - ECM, BPM, and the Application Development framework. Each place may have it's own subspaces, categories, questions, blogs, and documents. You can follow the activity in each area by clicking "Follow" in the banner.

 

For ECM, we wanted everything to be in the same space, so that when you search, you search through ALL of the ECM content. However, due to the sheer volume of content, we've also created three additional pages for easier consumption - Get Started, Alfresco Repository, and Alfresco Share. If you click into those areas (found under Explore), you'll see categories and content that relate just to those sections. Get Started groups together our many resources, so you can focus on integrations or extensions, for example. The Repository covers things like Installation, Configuration, Authentication and more. You can see the full list here. For Alfresco Share, we've just divided it by the type of user - end user or developer. You can see those here.

The content (questions, discussions, blogs, polls, images, etc) are all grouped into Categories in each area. For ECM, we have areas for Add-ons, Alfresco in the Cloud, Records Management, and more. The full list is on the main ECM page. If you click on any of the categories, you'll see all the content that relates to that area - whether it's a question, blog, or document.

 

Jive Categories

 

For BPM, there aren't any subspaces, but you can filter for content specifically related to the Enterprise edition here. We migrated the content from the Activiti.org forums into this community back in December, so you should be able to find anything you had once followed or participated in. 

 

The Application Development Framework does not have any subspaces currently, so you'll see all the content, organized by categories on the main page. We've recently added a Get Started page, so be sure to check that out!

 

Connect

 

The Connect section of the community is divided into 3 areas - Find People, Leaderboard, and Announcements & Opportunities. Find People is pretty self explanatory. This let's you search for other community members with several filters. You can look for someone with a particular skill, in a certain location, working on a defined Alfresco product. This is sourced from your profile, so be sure to complete yours to connect with similar members.

 

Find People

 

The leaderboard will show the most active and knowledgeable community members. Your activities in the community result in points added to your profile. The more active you are - posting topics, replying, following spaces, liking comments, etc - the more points you have. We'll define those activities and points in another post, for those of you interested. How knowledgable you are is defined by the accolades you receive from other members. If they mark your responses as correct, like your replies, or endorse you for skills, then you move up this scale. We'll add more about this later.

 

For Announcements and Opportunities, this is where you can post announcements, jobs, or opportunities to the entire community. If you've just created an app or released a book about Alfresco, let the community know here. If you're planning a local meet up, invite members in this space. If your company is hiring an Alfresco developer, post the information. You could even use the Find People option to find someone qualified.

 

Language Groups

 

This one is actually really easy - it's organized exactly the same way it was in the forums. All the categories are the same and there are no subspaces. If you speak Spanish, just select Spanish from the drop down and you can create content in Spanish there. These groups are open to anyone. Just be sure to Follow the group, to be updated on activity there and appear in the member section.
