Pass model data between tasks

I see how I can model a workflow task,  but I am wondering how to model a workflow itself.  I want to start a workflow when I upload a file,  and this file be the object of the workflow throuout.  How do I do this?  Is there a good example out there where I could start?

You can configure a folder's rule: for each document (content type) is entry on the folder, select de workflow you want to launch (Add simple workflow).
