Manual content versioning

Firstly, let me congratulate the team on such excellent work… Our company is currently looking for a document management too and so far this is the best I have seen yet.

The question I have is this:
When versioning is enabled, each new version which is checked in is given a, automatically updated, version number 1.0, 1.1, … etc
Is it possible to manually specify a version number rather than have the system do it automatically? or at least be able to change the version after it has been assigned (i.e. first version of document is labeled 1.0. Can we change that to, for example, 3.1 and have auto versioning continue from that point?)

Motive:
We have several existing documents which already have version numbers, many of our documents refer to specific versions of other documents.
It would be a massive task to edit each document and change the versions etc refered to within and so much nicer if we could check in these documents and label them as version 3, 3.1, 4, … etc as they are already.
Once all documents are in the repository then we would happily re-enable auto-versioning and have it carry on with 4.1, 4.2, … etc.
There may still however be times when things get out of sync and it would be good if we could edit a particular documents properties to change its version to fix this.

Thanks…
…Calvin
