Newbie question... WCM delivery stack best practices

Is there a current "best practices" for developing a web application to deliver content from Alfresco WCM?

I've been doing a bit of reading, but haven't had much of a chance to play with the technology yet… but my understanding is that Web Scripts should be used to expose web services against the Alfresco repository, and these are utilised by the web application of your choice, be it Java, PHP etc? If this is the case, I appreciate the loose coupling that this provides and the flexibility in the choice of presentation technology, but is it a highly scalable and an efficient means of accessing the repository?

Can Web Scripts be used to populate content into the repository? i.e. allow users to create content without using Alfresco WCM directly, but a from custom web application.

I'm considering an architecture using JBoss Portal as a front end for a website, and would like to evaluate Alfresco WCM as the web content repository - has anyone done this?

thanks in advance for your replies.
