MySQL table locks - performance?

Question asked by jharrop on Nov 11, 2008
I noticed though from INNODB STATUS that Innodb locks various tables.  For example:

TABLE LOCK table `alfresco/alf_transaction` trx id 0 2376116 lock mode IX
TABLE LOCK table `alfresco/alf_server` trx id 0 2376116 lock mode IS
TABLE LOCK table `alfresco/alf_usage_delta` trx id 0 2376116 lock mode IX
TABLE LOCK table `alfresco/alf_node` trx id 0 2376116 lock mode IS
      TABLE LOCK table `alfresco/alf_node_properties`

This is Innodb doing this, not Hibernate's MySQL statements.

There are primary keys on all these tables, and quite a few other indexes as well.  But still, the table locks :-(

Is getting rid of these likely to be a worthwhile avenue for performance improvement?

cheers

Jason
