How do I get a list of children for the current node

I am trying to change the Details view to display two custom columns instead of the created & modified date columns. I have edited Node.java and BrowseBean.java to add the two functions and add property resolvers for those functions, respectively.

I am now stuck at fetching a list of children for the current node. There is a function in Node.java called getChildAssociations() but I'm not sure what it does - I don't understand what is meant by "All the child associations this node has as a Map, using the association type as the key".

The code I would like in Node.java would be something like:

public String getTotalDocs() {
    List children = this.getChildren();
    return (String)children.size();
}

The real code will be a recursive function which will calculate the no. of documents under the current space, all the way down to the leaf.

I would appreciate if someone can help me with this.
