Can Alfresco search be accessed in CIFS?

Hi,

I am evaluating Alfresco for our web development group. We want people to be able to use the search feature in Alfresco repository because there are huge number of web pages that need to be maintained. However, once a web file is found the provided inline editor (TinyMCE) is really bad for working with php/html files.

We are able to use CIFS to open the documents as an Eclipse project, but then we can't search. Am I misunderstanding the capabilities of Alfresco's search feature? Should I be able to search out side of the Alfresco web client? IF so how?

If not, I need to find a suitable editor for html/php/xml files.

http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Adding_an_Editor_Guide mentions a java applet that can be set up as the inline editor, but I am not sure if this will work for our needs. This is also a commercial applet, we would prefer open source if possible.

If anyone has done this or has come across any good instructions on how to do this, please let me know.

Thanks,
