Invite to join sites fails

All installed with a range of users set up via admin and now users can login via share across the network. This is a test installation so all users have a dummy email, but it's on another domain I own and get mail on…

When one of the users creates a site, invites to other users fail. If the admin add users to a site (and provides role/permissions), the join request shows up in the relevant site manager's task list, but clicking on either Accept or Reject gives a "fail" message.

I'm pretty sure this is caused by email config problems - specifically SMTP still being configured to some example settings. I had followed some Alfresco Wiki guidelines for tweaking the properties file(s) but then the tomcat server glitched (related? Not sure).

What files need to be edited to provide a basic dummy email for all users that will enable successful invites? Strange that the SMTP and MAIL server attributes  cannot be set by admin in Alfresco Explorer. Can they? Surely that would be preferable?
