Erroneous HTTP requests from WebDAV client

Question asked by steven.okennedy on Dec 14, 2010

We have been seeing a strange issue where we're seeing a large number of HTTP requests with the method "OPTIONS" being sent at our live Alfresco server.  The server is only accessible from the LAN, so the requests are not being sent by an external party.  We did some network monitoring and we found that these requests all seem to have the User-Agent header set to "Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600" and that clients were sending many requests to a range of urls over a short period of time.  Since Alfresco doesn't handle requests with the OPTIONS methods, these requests are just getting 405 responses back, so they are just wasting resources

This is causing a lot of issues because we think that the large numbers of requests are flooding the thread pool and causing performance and access issues.  We are not using WebDAV in our system, but we are using CIFS.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before or have any idea why the Microsoft WebDav client is making these requests?
