3.4a to 3.4d slow startup under Glassfish V3

Does anyone have any hints as to why the startup under Glassfish V3 of the Alfresco version 3.4 series with Oracle takes over ten minutes?
The longest-running part seems to be initialization of the webscripts, from the log files (note the times, then the last entry below):

Note that this is behind a proxy; but adding proxyHost et. al.  to the GF JVM settings doesn't seem to make any difference; note also that database update is 'false' in the global properties file.
It seems to run OK after this is all done …
