Using auditng to record system state on a time interval?

I have a webscript that returns a list of users with currently active alfresco tickets.    I would like to be able to execute this script on my ticket expiry interval and record who was active when.

My goal is to be able to query past executions of this and be able to say "I had <this many> people log in between <this interval>"

What I'm looking for here is a sanity check.  I haven't done any work with the auditing subsystem, but it seems like I might be able to use it for storing my active user list with a time stamp, giving me a queryable result set.  Is that correct?  If not, how else might I accomplish this?
