Combining AND/OR with +/- in search queries

Question asked by robin.clarke on Jul 10, 2014
The <a href="https://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Search#Example_Queries">Example Queries</a> section of the Search page has the following example:

+PATH:"/app:company_home//." AND +ASPECT:"{vic.model}contractDocument"
AND ( @vic\:contractId:"617*" OR @vic\:contractId:"858*" OR @vic\:contractId:"984*" )

<strong>Why is the AND and OR notation being mixed with the + and - notation?</strong>

Can the same query be written as this? (without the +'s)

PATH:"/app:company_home//." AND ASPECT:"{vic.model}contractDocument"
AND ( @vic\:contractId:"617*" OR @vic\:contractId:"858*" OR @vic\:contractId:"984*" )

Or am I missing something here. Do the results of my query differ from the original?
