Making a repository for thesis in progress and tracking the changes in versions

Hello,
My faculty officers is forcing the students to use Microsoft word for redacting the thesis proposal
in order to track any changes using the its tool for tracking changes. This is annoying not only because
I hate using word for several reasons but also because it disallow us to use other word processing software like
SCRIVENER to name a few.

So I was wondering if I can suggest them to use ALFRESCO or other software where the students can upload their documents in PDF to be compared automatically between versions and allow the tutor to add comments on it.
