Upgrading from alfresco 3.3 to 5.2 - is it possible to export the documents from 3.3 and import into 5.2 install of alfresco?

Upgrading from alfresco 3.3 to 5.2 - is it possible to export the documents from 3.3 and import into 5.2 install of alfresco?

I am part of a team that is upgrading from alfresco enterprise version 3.3 to 5.2. We have alfresco 3.3 running in production and it has many documents in its repository. I was wondering what is the best way to move these documents to the new version? Is it possible to export them out of alfresco 3.3 and import them into a fresh install of 5.2? Or do we need  to do an upgrade? The upgrade sounds complicated as we have to go from 3.3 to 4.x first etc. Help please!
