Updates on embedded Activiti workflow engine in Alfresco 6.0 and above

Based on the initial Alfresco 6.x release, it was mentioned that the embedded Activiti workflow engine will be removed. But looking at the releases, it hasn't been done yet. What is the plan for this and if I can move my customized workflows to an external Activiti instance, how can I invoke them from ACS. Can you please provide some guidance or point me to some documentation regarding this?
Or can I continue to deploy my custom workflows in the embedded Activiti engine and migrate later when a clearer path is provided?
